Briggs 12HP Carb for Lawnflite 548 Please

Hi,
New to the forum, hoping for some expert help!

I have a pretty old Lawnflite 548 ride on which has been excellent but recently developed rough running and a fuel leak from the carb.  I tried cleaning and a new float, many times, no joy. So given the age I thought why not try a new carb.

The engine number is 280707-1028-01 and that gives a carb body part 490473 which I bought from ebay.  It looked to be a good fit until I noticed the choke lever is on the wrong side of the carb body.  There is an obvious recess in the casting on the correct side (outboard), with a hole to tap for the retaining screw, but it's no use because the lever is a press fit and is on the other side.  Very frustrating, even more so when all the carbs I look at online are the same.

Can anyone point me toward where I can find the correct part, and its part number?

ps: I tried to attach an image, no joy.

    Carb overhaul kit:

Personally, I'd try to stick with the OEM carb and fix that.
Aftermarket, in general, is not as good...

Thanks for the info on the replacement carb.....unfortunately that carb still has the choke and throttle cable on the same side, whereas on my old carb they are on either side of the carb.  All the new carbs have the casting with the recess for the choke on 'my side' but it isn't used.

So I tend to agree I should be refurbing my old carb.  I do have all the bits, but now I cannot get the main jet out of the casting (ie the brass screw inside the casting in the float bowl.  It is stuck fast and rapidly getting burred.  Heat and oil do nothing.  Any ideas?

    Thanks.

I'd support and clamp the carb as best as possible in a vise with the jet in question facing upward.

Using a hand impact tool (cheap, about $12.00) and a trimmed down bit to fit in the hole,
use that to impact and shock it loose...
