Generac GP6500

First time having my own generator 2 days ago.  Got it home filled the oil up the included oil, read the booklet on how to start and everything.  Ran the cables (extension cords (next story)) and fired it up.  Checked the box fan inside the house and no power.   Hmmmmm did I read everything?  Re-read the manual again yep got everthing.  Fired it up again, check all cables, and plugged in items and no power.  So, I looked at the control panel and the only thing left was that the 30 amp breaker was off.  Flipped that breaker on and POWER!  But now comes the other problem.  Ran it two nights, and with a full tank.  According to the manual, I should be able to get 11 to 12 hours per run and came to find out I was only get 5-6 hours.  So I called Generac (more than 4 times in 2 days) and they wanted me to go to an authorized dealer.  No thank you need the generator up and running until I get my power back on (live in SC).
So my two questions are this:
#1:  Why no power until I turned on the 30amp breaker?
#2:  Why only 4-6 hours of run time when running 2 box fans.
The extension cord I'm using the color is orange and that is all I know about them.
Thank You

The breaker on /off switch is normal.

Generally, the rating advertised is for half load.   I suspect you don't have a
low RPM option (auto throttle ) but it runs at approx 3,600 all the time.

With that said, your way under half load and you should be getting much more than time /tank.

Good luck with the recovery up there....

Yeah something is wrong, box fans use very little wattage. My parents inverter says the box fan I gave them is like 42 watts on the display. I’m getting 8 hours on my small 1200 watt champion generator with one box fan, another small fan, dehumidifier and freezer. I know people on wells are powering the pumps with the 6500 watt generator but I didn’t ask the run time though

I think I solved the run time with my 2 box fans.  Now I'm getting 10-11 hours, a. nd not just on two box fans either.  This is what I did.  The 1st cord was orange and black and at 100'.  I really don't like loud noise, and that is why I put it at 100'.  So the 2nd cord I use is just plain orange and it's only 50' and not only am I running two boxes fans, but charging all my devices that I can charge, plus running a notebook.  What a differences in 50', but the it doesn't stop there, once that 50' cord gets inside the house I have another orange cord 50' hookup to a pig tail.  Coming out of that pig tail I have 1 plug for just 1 box fan, 1 plug for my notebook, and 1 plug for another extension cord (50' orange) for either my TV or my tower fans that run at night.   Now remember I'm a beginner in this world of generators, but I still have lots of questions.  So if this is took long I'm sorry.  Because or Elect Co informed us that we may be without power for 1 month now, I have to come up with a way to get back some more normal ways around the house.  The only thing I'm actually missing that I need is my side by side Refrigerator/Freezer.  I solved the problem about having my side by side not to produce any ice as I also don't have any water (well).  So going by color (if possible) from the generator, what color cords do I need to run all of the above plus my refrigerator.  According to Generac the size generator I have can't really run lights, TV, computer and refrigerator.  So maybe if I get a 25' cord going from the generator into the house and then start braching off that might help (maybe).
THe type of generator I will get later is a generator to run the small items inside my house (lights, refrigerator, etc.) and have my Generac run my pump only.   I'm going to have to build a little enclosure for it to run in the rain.
    Again,
I thank you for helping me out in this.
