Tecumseh 5.5 hp? plastic Camshaft

i got a Coleman Powermate generator as a gift, but the generator part was busted, so I figured I’d use the engine for a go mart project. I swapped out the carb, did some maintenance, and got it running. Pretty sure it’s a Tecumseh 5.5 HP engine.

For some reason, these engines come with an all-plastic camshaft, basically a ticking time bomb. I’ve been searching for a steel replacement for a while now. I found one, but it was out of stock (probably forever). Since Tecumseh stopped making engines in 2008, my chances aren’t great, but I’m hoping someone knows of a compatible steel or at least metal camshaft from a different engine.

From what I’ve found, the camshaft model number is 37040, and the only steel one I located was 37040U. The generator’s model number is PM0401850.

I have high hopes for this engine, so if anyone has any leads, I’d really appreciate the help!
