Seeking Information about vintage Briggs & Stratton Motor and parts (6FB ?)

I am restoring a Sears Roebuck power reel lawn mower. Circa 1950's?  The plates on the mower deck indicate that the mower was mfg by Yard Man for Sears Roebuck.  Model Number 123.8151.  The plate on the engine state the model number is 500.105549 with a serial number of 58687.  I believe a letter is missing from the model number but don't know for sure.

My best guess is that the engine is a Briggs & Stratton model 6FB but I do not know for sure.  I am hoping someone can help me identify the engine, its year/month of manufacture.  If I am correct about the type of engine, I believe it has a Type N magneto.  I have had a hard time locating a working magneto and could use some guidance in that department as well.

Thank you.

Jim

Jimmy, try this sight: . There is section at the end of the page listing Antique Engine Collectors. These guys will probably be your best bet on identifying your engine and parts.

    Good luck

Looks like the link was stripped from my post. Have to wait a few hours before I can post a URL.

    HI Jimmy,

I have worked for a small engine repair shop for the last 20 years.  The engine you have is a single cylinder L-Head air cooled 6FB and you are not missing any info.  I verified the model # and spec #(105549) when I looked it up under Briggs & Statton Antique Engine Information for  dealer tech support.  The magneto part # listed is 291617  (older numbers that superceded to that # 292184,296084,29671,296858).  The part is NLA to order from Briggs.  Goggle the part# to see if anyone has new part in old inventory.   Hope this helps ya.

Thank you to all who responded.  The information was helpful.  My restoration is nearly complete but I am now in need of information regarding carburetor, blade governor and choke springs/linkage.  Specifically, I am looking for information about the spring and linkage type along with location/orientation.  My manual is less than helpful and I have not been able to find a diagram online.  And alas, it appears that the parts (springs and linkage) are no longer available for purchase so substitution is in order.

    Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
