17.5 hp Intek, blowing apart starter pinion gear

My lawn tractor with a 17.5hp Intek is blowing apart the starter gear pinions.  I've had 2 go in the past 6 weeks or so. The starter is new.  The mower does start rough, but once it starts the idle smooths out and it runs well. Any ideas what could be causing this?  Thanks in advance for any suggestions/thoughts.

Need model and type numbers from the valve cover and PN of pinion you're buying.

The model number of the engine is 31c707 0230-e1.  The starter part number is 593934.  The gear is part number 593935.  The gear is steel as is the flywheel and has 14 teeth. When I replaced the starter, I used  B&S, not aftermarket.

You know what I wanted to make sure of first.

Okay is it pinion disengaging properly? Otherwise is there enough clearance to allow it drop out from the ring gear? If not you may need to shim the starter out a little using couple thin washers between the crankcase and starter on the bolts. I had a few that I have to do this to but don't remember the actual models as I just done it and move on a few year ago.

Just thinking out loud...as the starter gear is only meant to turn a few hundred rpms and not idle or higher rpms.

Just waiting on the new pinion gears to arrive so I can check clearance etc.  Will respond when I have more info.  Thanks.

Like AVB, I am wondering if it is properly disengaging. Any news yet?

I had to order new gears.  They came late yesterday, so hopefully I'll put one in today.  I ordered 2 just in case...

I installed the new gear today.  When I went to remove the starter, it shifted.  One of the bolts had come lose.  I checked the clearance, and there was plenty.  When I reinstalled, I added lock washers and also put blue thread lock on the bolts.  I'll check it over the next few days. My gut says the bolt coming lose was problem.  Hopefully it will stay tight now.

    Thanks.

Firstly give me main objective of your parts holder with need model and type numbers from the valve cover and PIN of pinion you're buying.

The problem was resolved when I added the lock washer and thread lock.  When the bolt loosened, it allowed the starter to shift just enough to cause the pinion to bind and shatter.  Thanks for checking in.  I should have updated the post in October.
