Briggs 28N777 on Coleman Vertex 7500 Generator

I have a VERY tired 28N777 on a generator in my shop.  Putting together an estimate for rebuilding the engine.

Questions:

1. Can I get a kit for this engine with the usual parts?  Piston, rings, gaskets, seals, etc?
2.  Can the cylinder be bored on this engine?  Haven't pulled it apart yet, but given the amount of oil it's burning, I'd expect it'll need to be bored.
3.  If it can be bored, can you get a first-over piston and rings for it?

A new engine would be very close to $1000 by the time I paid taxes and shipping, don't really think the generator is worth that much of an investment.

Thanks for any information,
Paul

Go to Shop Parts and Equipment at the top of the page, click on Briggs then enter 28N777-the four digit type number. Most of your questions will be answered.

Sorry, I must be more dense than usual.

Shop parts and equipment takes me to a generic parts page, clicking on B&S and entering the model number takes me to a brand new engine.

Going back through the various types of parts from there shows all sorts of stuff available, but not specific to a 28N777, nor does it answer any of my specific questions.

Can you point out where I'm going wrong?  I hang out on a number of forums so I'm fairly familiar with things, but this one is eluding me.

    Yes, I found that.

Was hoping not to have to look up each individual part and order separately, but I see how it's going to be.

Beware that the IPL look-ups on Jack's can be only partials. A real pain for me but I learned to use other suppliers that have complete look-ups.

The only thing that comes in a kit engine rebuild wise would the gasket sets and carburetor rebuild kits. Other items must be ordered individually though most time you can order the piston with rings.

These are not bored but are honed to oversize using a rigid hone using the correct stones. Aluminum cylinders uses different stone than the cast iron/steel sleeved engines. Rigid hones take care of out round and taper cylinders, truing them back up. You also want to develop a nice 45 degree crosshatch so the rings will seat properly.

Personally I would not order parts until I know that the cylinder will clean up to the oversize and not over. I had some very close calls removing tapers. One I was down the last .001" before taper was removed. I also few that air pockets in the castings that made the over-sizing useless.

Ah.  An actual answer!  Thank you.

I'm going to recommend to the owner that he not bother.  The cost of rebuilding with my labor comes pretty close to the cost of a new generator anyway.

Add in the opportunities for the rebuild to go wrong plus the lack of warranty coverage on a rebuilt engine and it makes sense to just replace it.

Again, thanks for taking the time to help me make this decision.

That one of the reasons I don't do many rebuilds either is the justification of replacement cost is exceeded. The only engines I have rebuilt is primary for myself though the ones I have rebuilt for customers carried a 90 day warranty on the work done. And one them they ran without oil during 100+F temps.

I think Roy  was right and we don’t often consider sleeved engine.
