GX200 Clone Hard To Start

Hello! I've got a generator that uses a GX200 clone and I'm trying to get it to run right. It's got a new carb and spark plug. It will start and run reliably but the problem is how HARD I have to pull the cord to get it started. It's not that it's actually hard to pull but I have to pull hard to get the engine RPM up enough. A normal bend over and brace yourself on the machine won't work. I have to grab the cord with both hands, foot holding the generator down, and yank hard with my body to get the engine spinning fast enough to where it catches. Honestly, I'm not sure how the cord has not broken yet. Like I said, when it runs, it runs good. It's just super hard to start without tweaking my back. Any suggestions? I know for a fact this engine should not be this hard to start. My other knockoff GX200 on my log splitter starts with less than a 1/4 of the power put into the pull. Note: It doesn't matter if the engine is hot or cold.

Welcome to clones, guessing your having to pull hard to achieve spark?

Upon further inspection, yes. That’s exactly what’s happening. What the h*ll. I’ve had a few clones over the years and none of them have done this.

Clones seem to be hit or miss from one to the next. Some are easy to startup and others are a pain in the rear. Engine tolerances are not the same as Honda. A good cord does seem to help in starting on some instead of the fraying white cheap cords.

I figured out the problem. I pulled off the cord assembly and housing to reveal the magnets. They were rusted all to h*ll so I took some 180 grit to them and cleaned them up. A couple shots of compressed air later and we’re all good. Starts right up choke closed. Never had that problem with a small engine before and I live in Iowa. Right in the thick of the rust belt. You were right about the cord btw, I fashioned a new one out of paracord and it works perfectly. Took the slack right out and made starting a wee easier. Thanks for taking the time to even reply to me, man. I appreciate that, no joke.

Rust don't normally affect the magnetism transfer between the flywheel and the magneto but air gap does. Now it is possible if you remove the coil that it wasn't grounding properly to the cylinder due to the rust.
