1980's 11hp piston ring gap
Hi all, I just took my Briggs apart checked the ring gap that is Arround 3 mm wide what is the best thing to do? Order another piston and rings? Bore looks perfect, it's a 252707 not sure how old it is think Arround '83.

You need that type number and datecode before ordering parts as there are different piston and rings depending the datecode.
I assuming this is a L-head and not an OHV. The following is maximum ring end gap allowed (reject if above this). No spec given the service on the minimum. Oblivious there got to some clearance or the rings will break.

Also check the bore for taper, there is no sense putting new parts in a worn block.

While on the subject of cylinder condition there is the ovaling factor too. Between tapering and ovaling some are unusable after honing to oversize with with current .020 over piston and rings sets. We no longer have the .030 over available to us.
