I have work on horizontal shaft drive mowers but haven't had to install a new engine yet.

Probably going difficult to find an engine with a flywheel that can be drilled and tapped to 3/8-16 so the current flex coupler mount can be mounted. Though 5/16 puller holes might have enough material to allow this.

The reason is nearly all the Horizontal engine now are based on the slant Honda design. These engines will also mounting location problems too. You might be able to used a Vanguard V-twin but of course will be larger in hp ratings. I think they start around 16hp.

Plus you will need come up with a new debris shield for the flywheel.

    Is the old engine rebuild-able?

It probably is. It has a new magneto, spark plug, and wire. I just can't get it to run after it has warmed up. Thanks for the info.

What is the model number of the engine? 13 hp sounds odd for a Briggs horizontal. Check your valve clearances. A non invasive leakdown test will indicate a leaking head gasket.

    Simplicity 1690017 - Baron, 13HP System 7013 Shuttle and 42" Rotary Mower

Roy, If you remember there are manufacture that label engine HP rating differently than what we considerable known HP.
A good example is the Horizontal and Vertical Opposed engines. Here I had three opposed engines on Craftsman mowers in the shop at the same time that where they were labeled 18.5, 19.5, and 20.5. All were the same exact engine model and type; even the trim code were the same. This why Briggs got sued over HP ratings. It depends which they used Net or Gross HP.

Now the engine is question is probably a  28 cu in engine but as you said the model and type does needs posting so we know what we looking at parts wise.

The tractor is from 1976 so probably a 24 cu in cast iron engine but I am guessing here. If so don't throw it away, they don't build 'em like that anymore.  I would be looking for valve problems or a leaking head gasket.

With the info posted it is a 30 cu in engine. Also it will have a cast iron cylinder sleeve which adds to it to the overhaul desirability. Std cylinder diameter is 3.4365 - 3.4375. The problem that arises is that the oversize pistons are NLA which kills the rebuild.

This leaves only two options. An good used replacement engine or a new engine.
