Ariens A22A46 Briggs & Stratton engine - replace transaxle control cam

I need to replace the transaxle control cam on my Briggs & Stratton engine.  I'm pretty handy with replacing belts and installing appliances, but I've never done anything like this before.  Any tips/suggestions are most welcome.  Stupid question - this is a part of the engine... right?

No it is not part of the engine; it is on the top of the General Transmissions RS800P transaxle. To get to it you must remove the rear transaxle and and the driven pulley which requires a special tool. Once removed then you can access the variation control cam.

Download the service manual for the RS800P from here.

Thank you!  I've been searching all over for instructions and couldn't find anything.  I really appreciate your help.

Any idea if I can do this just by removing the battery?  I'm wondering if there will be enough work room through that hole...

Not a one. I haven't had to work a RS800P yet except to put in axle seals but I think it would be a lot easier with it out.
