Techuseh valve seats

When installing oversized valves in a Tecumseh hs40 do you have to just ream them out or get the valve guides cut also

That is an old engine, the seats likely could use cleaning up if you have acess to the rather expensive tool to do it.

Over sized valves usually refers to the valve stem.

Here is what is stated in the service manual on this subject.

Oversize Valve Guides (Pre-emmisionized Engines)

The valve guides are permanently installed in the cylinder block. If they get worn excessively, they can be reamed
oversize to accommodate a 1/32" (.793 mm) oversize valve stem.

The guides should be reamed oversize with a straight shanked hand reamer or low speed drill press. Refer to the "Table of Specifications" (Chapter 10) to determine the correct oversize dimension. Reamers are available through your local Tecumseh parts supplier. Consult the tool section in Chapter 11 for the correct part numbers.

The upper and lower valve spring caps must be redrilled to accommodate the oversize valve stems.

After oversizing the valve guides, the valve seats must be recut to align the valve seat to the valve guide.

Now this where is very expensive very fast.

First you need a 9/32 piloted reamer (about $25-$35) plus a taper cone (additional cost) for first initial reaming of the worn valve guide. Tecumseh no longer have either these available so you need to get them from Briggs and modify the cone so that the 9/32 piloted reamer will fit it. Then depending how well aligned this done it either simple valve to seat grinding or if off by quite bit then it is a set of Neway seat cutters which are over $300 to re-align valve guide to seat contact.

Not many of the small engine shops even have set of these anymore as most engines are now OHV or OHC which we can't get valve guides or seats for.

Also note that the Briggs valve guide repair tool sets are also going NLA. Individual tools are still on as available basis.
