44s977-0033-g1 problems

Got a problem with a brand new B&S engine model 44s977-0031-g1 engine it will only run with starter fluid sprayed into carb intake. checked fuel pump its working and have checked fuel shut-off solenoid that's working but carburetor does seem to be pulling gas in engine to run. what can the problem be? i checked the gas and it's ok choke is closing and opening and trottle is wide open. doesn't have oil pressure switch, everything looks ok but it won't stay running without starter fluid.

I had a couple brand solenoids from Briggs that failed to operate correctly. Try removing and install an appropriate sized screw in it place then try it. I think it is a M8-100 but not 100% sure.

Tying in to this thought, can the solenoid be removed, if an appropriate plug is found?  What does this cause at shutdown?  Backfire, fuel leakage, etc..?  Similar issue on 23 hp Briggs engine, 13 years old, pump appears to work - disconnected and have flow, solenoid clicks and has appropriate voltage, float not stuck, getting fuel to the bowl but engine won't run.  Spray or flood with fuel and engine will fire just not run.  Unless the carb is subject to complete clogging, best guess is the solenoid is bad.  Can the plug tip be removed from the push arm, if so the solenoid can be the plug at the base of the bowl?  Any thoughts?

What people a lot times call a backfire is raw detonating in the hot exhaust. That is why this solenoid is added to fuel system to help prevent this.

So if the solenoid is actually blocking the fuel from flowing to the carb/engine, then without it the engine should run but may occasionally detonate exhaust laden fuel when the engine is shut down and hot?

Yes. If it is brand new can you not take it back to the dealer for service? Just don't let him smell starting fluid, any warranty will be voided.
