Craftsman 28” 2stage snowblower -auger trans knock

Auger knock developed after using for a time with one blade down (shear pin). Hesitant to open auger trans case to examine worm drive condition. Machine still throws excellent and want to finish season - local repair service could take weeks +. A sealed case could be real hastel to reassemble right, but damage to drive shaft threads would mean repairing/replacing parts going through firewall into interior of internal drive systems. What to do- what to do?

Diagnosing a "knock" via email is close to impossible, but I'm just thinking every time you hear more damage is being done. Have you at least replaced the broken shear bolt? You should never let your stock of them get below 2!

Not sure where you might be located but here in Central NY the "season" is just getting started!

Problems like this are one of the reasons I have two "main line" Ariens 24 inch blowers and a couple others I might be able to put in service or use for parts in a pinch. The other reason I have a few "spares" is when I heard about someone who decides the cost of repairs are too much on an old machine I offered to take the sick machine off their hands.
