Craftsman 27 CC Weed Whacker & Brush Trimmer

Hi guys,

Just picked up a used weed whacker in the title.  It runs until it gets hot then shuts down.  It has new gas from the pump this morning, clean air filter and runs great at first so I don't necessarily suspect a carb issue.  Venting the cap doesn't seem to help.

I'm leaning towards the ignition coil because the primary side resistance seems to change with temperature.  When it got hot and died the coil was at 38 ohms.  When it was cool it was below 5 if I remember correctly.  Is this normal or a bad sign?

Hopefully you are using the appropriate fuel as you didn't post the model number. It could be 2 cycle or 4 cycle version because if 2 cycle you must mix fuel oil with the gasoline.

But yes it sounds like the ignition is failing as most are self contain setups. With primary resistance changing it sounds like the electronics are failing when heated.

That is not a valid model number, sounds like the emissions information. It should start with something like 358.xxxxx

Perfect thank you.  So it looks like the real problem is that it needs a new piston and head.  However that is not listed on the parts diagram.  Are those possible to replace?

I was thinking about just smoothing them out with an abrasive if the parts can't be located...

At one time you could get these parts for many handheld but in the OEMs infinite wisdom, they have decided to no longer offer these; instead just offer short blocks which usually kills any reasonable repairs even for DYIers.
