Hello,

Picked up a new Gravely to me in the process of getting it going.
Gravely Professional Model-985107 Serial-000207
16HP Briggs and Stratton Vanguard V-Twin Model: 303447-0443-01 (3082) COD 940908**

Flywheel’s aluminum ring gear teeth are stripped.
I searched and searched for a replacement flywheel. B&S doesn’t make the exact model flywheel or replacement aluminum ring gear anymore, but does recommend and offer an alternative which I ordered and received (Briggs & Stratton Flywheel Conv Kit Part #844818)

So far I’ve removed the old flywheel and determined the following:
  • Stator with one black wire. Appears to be original and brittle.
  • The voltage regulator is trashed with phenolic filler crumbling out.
  • Magneto coils are corroded and plates separating
  • Starter looks new and the housing graphically appears to be correct per parts manual(for aluminum ring gear). However the bendix has steel gear… so it’s possible previous owner swapped out the plastic gear for steel…. likely the fatal flaw that stripped the ring gear teeth.
  • I believe current electrical set up is one of the ”H” configurations (see attached table).

Here’s my question(s):
  • Considering all engine electrical system components need to be replaced…should I?, plan on upgrading and replace these components and what model numbers will work with the new flywheel model?
  • Unfortunately, the new flywheel magnets are hidden behind a factory metal cover and cannot determine any specifics about the magnets size.
  • If I replace all these electrical components, I’d like to get the most reliable/versatile upgrade/modernized power configuration…of course based off of the constraints of the gravely platform and new flywheel.
  • Just to be clear, can you refer me to the exact model manuals? Parts, Service, and operating?  The ones I’ve located and working off are from 3 different date revision from 2000, 2011, and 2023.
I have dozens more photos. I can post upon request.

Anybody? I know I dumped a lot of detail on you guys.  I'm not expecting anyone to solve the whole riddle.  Just looking for a sounding board or any little piece of the puzzle might help!  Thanks for any feedback!
