Briggs & Stratton 17.5 HP Intek

Ariens riding lawn tractor; Briggs and Stratton 17.5HP Intek.  Main gasket between top and sump leaking oil.  Pulled the engine and split the halves.  Noted that the bolts that retain the oil pan to the top have what appears to be a small amount of red Loctite applied.  Is this normal?  Also, some of the old gasket had a little dab of clear Permatex in a few areas.  Suppose this was to keep the gasket in place when reassembling?  Last, is there a torque spec for the bolts that retain the two halves (the ones that seemed to have red Loctite on them?  Any help would be appreciated. TIA. wg

As for red loctite on the bolts, it doesn't call for it however it wouldn't hurt anything.
I red loctited my connecting rod bolts also when I torqued to spec's (same engine on my Toro turn)..

I have a 17.5 HP Intek engine and it is 31R907-0018-G1 engine type.  Which of the torque specs applies from the link you sent? Is mine an OHV single cylinder 310000 @ 180 in/lbs?  Thanks for the clarification.  That would be 15 ft/lbs which sounds about right.   TIA

I think the random dabs of clear Permatex were to hold the gasket in place.  The gasket is thin and curls easily.  I used a few drops of Hylomar HPF gasket dressing (blue stuff) and it held the gasket while I reinstalled the sump pan.  This job would have been much easier if the brilliant engineer who designed this lawn tractor had considered that someone might want to get at the bolts underneath.... the one mount bolt will have to be started before completely lowering the engine into place.  The bolt for the belt safety rod is hidden under the frame member and is a chore to loosen or tighten as only a thin and short wrench can get in there.  They should make engineers who design stuff completely disassemble and then reassemble; this goes for anything with wheels!  Thanks for the help. wg

I used an OEM gasket and didn't have any issues with it moving.
Now I did have the engine on the bench, on it's side..
 
Make sure you get the oil pump in correctly and the governor set correctly.

I used genuine B&S parts and believe things were set correctly.
